And then select a free position. The list of available buildings will be shown.
You should also know there's another two kind of positions specifically reserved for port building and city wall building.

Wall-reserved position:
Once a building is constructed, its function may be used simply by selecting it in the city overview. There you can also upgrade the building. Usually the higher level the better effectiveness.
The available buildings list depends on the development of your researches.
It's recommended to build first an Academy, a Trading Port and a Barrack.
Research
Once the Academy is constructed, you'll be able to assign citizens as researchers in the same way you did with the workers.
Then you can choose the branch of investigation you want your researchers to work in.
The options are:
Trade
As soon as the Trading Port is available you can start building Merchant Ships to trade resources with other players. These can be bought in the Trading Port and get automatically added once you do so.
After this is done a new option to trade resources will appear at the left menu whenever you select a city in the island overview. Select it and you will be taken to a new page to specify the quantities you wish to send.
Warfare
You will need a Barrack to train your troops and a War shipyard to build War ships. Troops will stay in the city to defend it if you're being attacked.
When the time to attack someone comes, choose his city in the island overview.
In the left menu you'll see the following options:

- Tip: The raw material sources are shared for the whole island, and therefore used by all cities in the island. The actual level of the raw material source is shared for the whole island, thus you can contribute as well as your neighbors to upgrade it. Ask them if they don't want to take part.

- Military - New unit types and improvements for these.

- Tip: Merchant Ships don't take maintenance costs. It might be a good idea to invest in fleet if you happen to have too much gold left.

When the time to attack someone comes, choose his city in the island overview.
In the left menu you'll see the following options:
- Plunder - Your units will try to plunder raw material for the city. If there are enemy units in the city these will have to be defeated first.
- Take-over - You can take over a city that will serve to do future attacks from there. However the units used to take over will cost maintance, of which a percentage will be received by the owner of the occupied city.
- Block-port - Prevents any ships to trade from and to this city.
- Tip: Be sure to add Merchant Ships in your attack. Your soldiers are there to fight not to carry resources.
